Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to the arts from her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant so that she could have the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote social activism. In the same way, her mother was conscious of her social status and influenced her to say something through the arts. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father recalled the civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a young student. She began working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house of an individual member of the Jury. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and so, after deciding to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist immediately after graduation. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
